But that phrase is about fitment, not about running it safely at 7,000 RPM. Three supporting parts are effectively mandatory alongside this cam, and skipping any of them is the single most common reason a fresh 224cc build comes back with a bent valve or a thrown rod:

  • 18 lb valve springs - the stock springs are not rated for this cam's lift/duration and will float the valves at race RPM.
  • Billet connecting rod - the stock rod is not built for sustained high-RPM operation; this is the #1 failure point on a cam-only upgrade.
  • Billet flywheel - stock cast flywheels are a known failure risk once you're past stock RPM and torque, and they don't tolerate the ignition-timing changes a performance cam needs.

Budget for all three at the same time you order the cam - not as an afterthought after the first "why did this break" teardown.

224cc-specific fitment detail: the 58mm stroke

224cc crankshafts use a 58mm stroke, which is longer than the 55mm/56mm strokes common on smaller displacement clones. The 224cc-specific camshafts are ground with narrow lobes and extra lobe-to-lobe clearance specifically to give the connecting rod room to swing through that longer stroke, and the compression-release mechanism is thinner to clear the larger 58mm crank counterweight. This is why a 224cc cam and a 212cc cam are NOT interchangeable even though they bolt to a similar-looking case - always confirm the cam you're buying lists your specific displacement and stroke.

Cylinder head considerations

Pairing a ported/milled cylinder head with this cam raises static compression and improves flow at the RPM range the MOD2 is targeting (7,000+). If your class allows head modifications, match the head work to the cam's duration - a head ported for high-RPM flow on a stock cam (low lift/duration) usually loses low-end response without gaining anything, because the cam is the limiting factor, not the head.
