LO206 Tires: 6.0 or 7.1 on the Rear?

The first LO206 tire argument is usually width, not compound. You bought a used kart with 7.1 rears. The club specs a 6.0. Someone says stretch the 6.0 onto the wide wheel. Someone else says 7.1 is too much tire for 14 horsepower.

Heat wins this argument. A narrower tire that is in its temperature window will beat a wider tire that never gets there.

Run the spec size first

Club and regional sheets name a brand and a size. Evinco Blue, MG, Vega, Hoosier. If the class is 6.0 on the rear, that is the tire. Availability is part of why 6.0 became the default. A 7.1 in the same compound can be legal and still be the wrong shopping choice if nobody stocks it the week you need a set.

Do not show up on a lookalike tire because the durometer is close. Tech reads the sidewall.

What 6.0 vs 7.1 actually changes

  • Heat. A narrower rear crowns more on a narrower wheel and builds temperature faster. On a hard club tire (high 50s and up), that is often what you want. On a softer red, extra heat can make the tire fall off late in a run.
  • Sidewall. Stretching a 6.0 onto a 7.1 / 210mm euro wheel stiffens the sidewall. The tire rolls under less. The rear can feel freer and more consistent, which is useful on a chassis that already sticks. It is not free grip.
  • Grip vs bind. A 7.1 that is working in cool weather can lock the rear once the track rubbers up. Drivers who swapped to 6.0 in midsummer often did it to stop the rear from dragging speed off.

There is no magic width for every LO206. Driver weight, wheel width, and how hard you can put heat in the tire matter more than the number on the box.

Should you stretch a 6.0 on a 7.75 wheel?

You can. People do it. It is a tuning choice, not a shortcut around buying the right wheels.

If you are in year one, buy 6.5 to 7.25 wheels for a 6.0 tire and go race. Stretching is for when you already know the kart is tight and you want the sidewall stiffer. On a first-season Intrepid or similar, a lot of people prefer that freer rear. Confirm it with hot pressures and a stopwatch, not a forum opinion.

Pressure still matters more than width

Cold pressure is a guess. Hot pressure is the setup. Kart tires grow 2 to 5 psi in a run. Measure immediately off the track. A typical hard-compound hot window sits around 14 to 18 psi. Full process: LO206 tire pressure guide.

Buy the spec size. Match the wheel to the tire. Heat first, width second. Stretching a 6.0 onto a 7.1 wheel can free a tight rear. A 7.1 can be too much rear on a rubbered-up 206 track. Year one: mount what the club runs and learn to drive it.
